Australia’s most prestigious and (as far as we are aware!) only award for young waiters

27 March 2020: In light of the unprecedented and uncertain times that the hospitality industry is currently experiencing due to the impacts of the covid-19 virus we have made the difficult but necessary decision to hit pause on the 2020 Appetite for Excellence awards. As our industry navigates unchartered waters we feel that the best way to support our community of judges, and young chefs, waiters and restaurateurs, is to allow them to focus their full attention and energy on their businesses and livelihoods over the coming months. Stay tuned though as WE WILL BE BACK IN 2021.

If you are an aspiring young waiter who dedicated to a career in hospitality and wants to take things to the next level then this is the awards for you!

Enter now for the opportunity to meet industry leaders, engage with like-minded peers, challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone, gain constructive feedback from the judges, visit one of Australia’s leading food-growing regions and learn about agriculture & viticulture, and, if you are the winner, travel overseas and experience a stagiaire at a world-renowned restaurant.

WHO CAN ENTER YOUNG WAITER 2021?

Waiters who meet the following criteria are eligible to enter:

Are over 18 years of age or over by the application deadline
Are aged 31 years of age or under on the awards event date
Are currently working professionally within the restaurant or catering industry in Australia on a full time basis or equivalent, and have been for a minimum of 18 months
Are currently working in an establishment that holds a liquor licence
Have completed and hold the nationally recognised Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate (RSA)
Are not the owner, or part owner of a restaurant/hospitality business
Are not a hospitality trainer/teacher on a casual, part time or full time basis
Are an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident

Entry is via submission of a completed online application form and payment of the $55 entry fee by the deadline.

JUDGING PROCESS

The judges assess all eligible applications and select a shortlist of the strongest applications who will be announced as the Appetite for Excellence Young Waiter 2021 finalists.

The Appetite for Excellence Young Waiter 2021 finalists will participate in the 2021 Produce Tour. They will also participate in two days of Judging in Sydney as well as attend the Awards Event in Sydney when the Young Chef, Waiter and Restaurateur 2021 winners will be announced at an invitation-only event attended by Australia’s leading chefs, restaurateurs, media and program partners.

THE 2021 young WAITER national finalists will ENJOY:

The Appetite for Excellence Young Chef 2021 finalists will join the Young Waiter 2021 finalists on an all-expenses paid regional produce tour to one of Australia’s leading food destinations where they will meet, and learn from some of Australia’s world renowned dairy, seafood, meat, horticultural and viticultural producers. This prize is made possible with the support of our valued partners such as PorkStar, Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and Rare Medium.
