appetite for excellence
Founded in 2005 by Luke Mangan and Lucy Allon, Appetite for Excellence is Australia’s leading awards programs for young talent working in hospitality, judged by the best of the best of the industry.
Recognising and rewarding all aspects of the industry, Appetite for Excellence is the only Australian hospitality program that recognises and awards talented chefs, waiters and restaurateurs who are the next generation industry leaders and will represent Australia’s future culinary footprint on the world stage.
Through a program of application and judging, educational workshops and leadership mentoring activities, Appetite for Excellence identifies Australia’s top young talent, puts them through their paces, challenges them to develop their skills and provides them with mentoring and education to nurture their success in becoming Australia’s next generation of inspiring leaders.
Appetite for Excellence is led by a community of Australia’s top industry talent as judges who give their valuable time to mentor the next generation. Judges, present and past, include Peter Gilmore, Dan Hunter, Mark Best, Christine Manfield, David Thompson, Brett Graham, Dave Pynt, Ross Lusted, Peter Doyle, Guy Grossi, Troy Rhoades-Brown, Lisa van Haandel, Nick Hildebrandt, Sam Christie, Marilyn Annechini, Dan Hong, Analiese Gregory, Kylie Javier Ashton and Duncan Welgemoed, to name but a few!
As a testament to the success of the program, past winners and finalists include those now leading the new wave of exciting, ground-breaking Australian restaurants such as James Viles (Biota; Barn by Biota), Josh Niland (Saint Peter; Fish Butchery) and Danielle Gjestland (Wasabi). THE INSPIRED SERIES
Developed by Luke Mangan in 2015, the goal of The Inspired Series is to shift how the hospitality industry is perceived, by engaging with industry leaders and demonstrating to students and young job seekers that hospitality need not be part-time job but rather a rewarding and varied career path.
The Inspired Series provides access to industry leaders, to hear first-hand their career stories and experiences and learn about the varied career pathways open to hospitality graduates.
Through a series of talks held in schools and TAFEs, students have had the opportunity to hear from international icons like Richard Branson, some of the world’s best chefs including Massimo Bottura, Daniel Humm, Brett Graham and top Australian chefs such as Guy Grossi, Peter Gilmore, Josh Niland, Dan Hong and Danielle Alvarez, to name just a few.
